Eswatini Bank has proudly announced a generous sponsorship of E700,000 for the 20th edition of the Schools Choral Music Competition, a significant milestone that underscores the bank’s long-standing commitment to youth development and the arts.

Dr Nozizwe Mulela, the Managing Director of Eswatini Bank, expressed her enthusiasm for this momentous occasion, stating, “This investment affirms our commitment to nurturing musical talent and empowering young people across the Kingdom.”

As the competition marks two decades of uniting the nation through the power of music, it has become a vital platform for nurturing young talent and fostering personal growth.

Dr Mulela reflected on the journey, saying, “This moment would not be possible without the dedication, passion, and unwavering support of the many individuals who have believed in this vision from the very beginning.

” She emphasized that sustaining a project for two decades requires more than just funding; it necessitates deep commitment, shared values, and relationships built on trust and mutual respect.

The Schools Choral Music Competition began in 2005 when Eswatini Bank recognized a unique opportunity to contribute meaningfully to youth development through music.

The initial proposal came from a team led by Dr Elmon Shongwe, whose vision laid the foundation for what has become a celebrated tradition in the Kingdom. Dr. Mulela expressed gratitude to the pioneering committee, stating, “To that pioneering committee, we remain eternally grateful.”

Youth development has always been a key component of Eswatini Bank’s Corporate Social Investment (CSI) program. The competition has served as a beacon, shaping the creative expression of thousands of learners across the country.

Dr Mulela noted, “It has enabled students to discover their gifts, grow in confidence, and become engaged, well-rounded citizens.”

Over the past 20 years, the Eswatini Bank Schools Choral Music Competition has grown exponentially, becoming one of the largest and most anticipated musical events in the nation. Dr Mulela highlighted several key milestones that have marked this journey:
Introduction of an Orchestra:

The competition was the first in the Kingdom to feature a full orchestra, setting a new standard in performance and musicality.

Skills Development: Initially, many adjudicators came from neighbouring countries. Today, thanks to intentional investment in local talent, the adjudication panel features a majority of highly skilled Swati professionals, showcasing the competition’s impact on building capacity and excellence within Eswatini.

International Success Stories: Many former participants have gone on to perform and study internationally, proudly representing Eswatini. Notable names include Thando Zwane (UK), Thandolwethu Mamba (USA), Prosper Makhanya (USA), Simphiwe Msibi (USA), and Themba Mdlalose (Cape Town).

Legacy of Mentorship: Many conductors and music educators today are alumni of the competition, highlighting its profound impact on the music education landscape in Eswatini.

Dr Mulela paid tribute to the late maestro Sam Sikelela Msibi and countless unsung heroes—teachers, mentors, and volunteers, who have nurtured music in schools and communities.

She also celebrated the inclusion of music in the primary school expressive arts curriculum, an advancement supported by platforms like this competition.

Reflecting on the competition’s growth, Dr Mulela noted that in 2005, Eswatini Bank sponsored the event with E50,000. Today, as they celebrate two decades of impact, the bank is contributing E700,000 to the 2025 edition.

“This investment affirms our commitment to nurturing musical talent and empowering young people across the Kingdom,” she reiterated.
This year’s competition promises exciting highlights, including:

Vernacular Excellence: For the first time, all compositions will be 100 per cent in SiSwati, celebrating the nation’s language, identity, and heritage.
Local Orchestra Participation:

The Mbabane Orchestra will accompany the “Champ of Champs” performance and the trio category, ensuring a top-tier musical experience.
