Introducing the new E50 note! The Central Bank of Eswatini (CBE) has urged emaSwati to familiarize the recently launched E50 commemorative note.
During the Central Bank of Eswatini Golden Jubilee, His Majesty King Mswati III unveiled the new E50 banknote on May 10, 2024.
This commemorative note, which will circulate alongside the existing E50 banknote, represents not only a tribute to the past but also a step towards the future of Eswatini’s currency.
The launch took place at the CBE Complex site in Ezulwini, where a gathering of dignitaries, government officials, and members of the public came together to witness this historic occasion.
In his address, His Majesty emphasized the importance of the new note, particularly for collectors and those with a keen interest in the nation’s financial heritage. He remarked
, “This note is a symbol of our progress and resilience as a nation. I encourage all citizens to familiarize themselves with it, not just as a currency, but as an emblem of our enduring legacy.”

The new E50 note is not merely a change in currency; it embodies the essence of Eswatini’s rich cultural heritage and the achievements of the CBE over the past five decades.
While the commemorative note is introduced into circulation, CBE has assured the public that the existing E50 notes will remain valid and will not be withdrawn from circulation.
This decision aims to ensure a smooth transition for the public as they adapt to the new currency while retaining familiarity with the old.
The last significant alteration to the E50 note took place in April 2021, when the bank updated the currency to reflect the country’s name change from the Kingdom of Swaziland to the Kingdom of Eswatini.
At that time, the note also featured a new portrait of His Majesty King Mswati III, marking a new era in the nation’s currency design. The introduction of the E50 commemorative note builds on this legacy, further enhancing the significance of the nation’s monetary system.
Moreover, the CBE has been proactive in revamping its currency offerings. Just last year, on September 9, 2023, during the Eswatini International Trade Fair, the bank introduced a rebranded E200 note, showcasing its commitment to modernizing the currency while honouring the nation’s history.
The unveiling of the E50 commemorative note serves as a poignant reminder of the bank’s journey and its pivotal role in shaping the nation’s economic landscape.
