The Kingdom of Eswatini continues to intensify its fight against unemployment and poverty alleviation with various initiatives implemented to tackle the two.

In the latest move, His Majesty King Mswati III has commissioned the recruitment process at the Umbutfo Eswatini Defence Force (UEDF), marking a renewed commitment to strengthening the country’s military while also availing opportunities for the youth to find employment. The last recruitment drive took place in 2023, and anticipation is high for the new batch of recruits.

The UEDF has ensured a transparent recruitment process, conducting public interviews across various constituencies in Eswatini.

This initiative not only reflects the UEDF’s commitment to inclusivity but also serves to build trust between the military and the communities they serve.

Historically, the number of soldiers passing out from training has varied, but 2025 saw a remarkable surge in success, with over 800 recruits completing their training—significantly more than previous cohorts.

This increase not only highlights the heightened interest in military service among the youth but also underscores the effective training methods implemented by the UEDF.

When announcing the recruitment exercise, His Majesty described this as part of succession planning, which he said was “at the heart of all successful nations.”
“I therefore commission a nationwide Army recruitment as it has been a long time since there has been one. Your swift response during the heavy rains must be commended. I am happy that the Army is growing,” the King said to much applause from the attendees.

His Majesty further commended the Army for its innovative and progressive programmes, including the defence industries, the development of the Mbuluzi School of Infantry and the defence attaches programme. The King assured the Army of Government and the Nation’s support towards the success of all its programmes.

The UEDF has been receiving praise for the work it does recently. Earlier in the month, the army was commanded for the critical role it plays during disasters in the Kingdom.

Senators hailed the force for assisting during disasters as witnessed during the recent storm where an army helicopter was seen rescuing helpless people.
His Majesty’s announcement of the recruitment comes at a time when the army’s E1.7 billion budget was unanimously approved by senators.

As Eswatini continues to navigate various challenges, the recruitment of a new generation of soldiers is a strategic move to ensure national security and readiness.

Residents across Eswatini are encouraged to participate during the recruitment and embark on a journey of service to the country. His Majesty urged all eligible citizens to consider joining the military, underlining the importance of service to the nation in times of uncertainty.

The King not only commissioned a nationwide recruitment drive but also announced key promotions within the military hierarchy, emphasizing the importance of a robust defence force for the nation.

During the celebrations, the King also appointed five Brigade Generals: Mthiza Dlamini, Bongani Spitsiphitsi Simelane, Comfort Bhembe, Bheki Tsabedze, and Petros Bhembe, recognizing their contributions and dedication to the defence of Eswatini. Furthermore, the most notable appointment of the day was Ncalawe Dlamini, who was elevated from Brigadier General to Major General, reflecting the King’s confidence in his leadership capabilities.

King Mswati III’s commitment to the military was palpable as he promised additional promotions soon, signalling a proactive approach to recognizing and rewarding service and leadership within the Army.
